Overview
The Team Star Challenge is an official Online Competition featuring single battles. It is the fifth Online Competition in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet games with a custom format, and the second played with single battles.
A little bit of history
Online Competitions are usually a part of the casual gameplay, but they have been featured in the official circuit for some years now. They are one of the few tournaments in which all world regions play together, and it generally grants National invites in TPC regions and Championship Points in TPCi regions.
Those that are not part of the official circuits usually run a custom format. The last one of those was the Blueberry Prologue, a double-battle Online Competition played in January 2024. The custom ruleset allowed for any Pokémon in the Blueberry Pokédex. First place was earned by Japanese player Myon, who used this team to finish at a rating of 1905. Myon surpassed Japanese-Australian Masayoshi Kuroo, who used this other team to earn a rating of 1895.
The most recent Online Competition featuring single battles was the Trick Magic, played in November 2023. The custom ruleset allowed for any non-Restricted Ghost-type Pokémon. First place was earned by Japanese player Kino, who earned a rating of 1886.8, and had already finished in first place in the Paldea Prologue Online Competition. Kino beat fellow countryman Otoha, who earned a rating of 1886.3.
American James Evans, the 2018 Senior Division World Champion, defeated Brazilian Gabriel Agati in the NAIC finals.
