Overview
The Oceania International Championships, or OCIC, is one of the four official TPCI International events for Pokémon VGC, TCG and Pokémon GO, alongside the Latin America (absent from the VGC circuit this season), Europe and North America Internationals. It is the first Internationals of the 2023 season and of the new games Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet. It is also the last event in the world in the EUIC travel award race.
It is the fifth edition of OCIC. See the results of the previous editions:
- 2017, won by Zoe Lou
- 2018, won by Alessio Yuri Boschetto
- 2019, won by Eduardo Cunha, 2022 World Champion
- 2020, won by Marco Silva
The ruleset is VGC Series 2 and it will be played using open team lists.
A little bit of history
Australia has been part of the Oceania region of the official TPCI circuit since they were established. It has hosted multiple major events, including Regional Championships, old-era National Championships and all editions of OCIC since its inception in 2017. Australia’s greatest VGC success is Nicholas Kan‘s 2017 Junior Division World Championship win, while in the Masters Division Sam Pandelis reached that same year the finals at the 2017 World Championships.
The most recent tournament held in Australia was the 2022 Melbourne Regionals, played in Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield with the VGC Series 12 ruleset in June 2023. The finals saw Australian Sam Pandelis defeat fellow countryman Will Tom.
The last time the Oceania International Championships were held was the 2020 edition, hosted in Melbourne, played in Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield with the VGC Series 2 ruleset in February 2020. The OCIC finals saw Italian Marco Silva defeat then-reigning Oceania International Champion and future 2022 World Champion, Portuguese Eduardo Cunha.
