Participating players
The 2023 Hong Kong National Championships is open only to the players that qualified through the following criteria:
- Top 64 playersĀ in theĀ Hong Kong Nationals Qualifier
Qualified players need to sign up to an invite-only Online Competition (PokĆ© Portal ā Battle Stadium ā Online competitions ā Search for a competition) and as a form of team submission as per the indications sent to them by email (even though this event is not played as a ladder competition). Players also need to submit a Rental Team code, although during this time it was unknown to them whether it would be played using closed or open team lists.
The deadline for this was initially announced as 1 June at 9 am HKT. Players were sent a second email on 30 May late evening stating this was a mistake and the actual deadline was 31 May at 9 am HKT. Due to the short notice, many players missed it or rushed it, and later that day an extension was given until 1 June at 3 pm HKT. The same email banned theĀ newly available items and Egg Moves, creating further uncertainty to players who locked their team between the PokĆ©mon HOME update and the ban notification.

Players must be in the venue by 4 June 2023 at 9:00 HKT (03:00 UTC) for the players meeting, and the single-elimination bracket will start thereafter.
All matches are played as best-of-one, except the finals, which will be played as best-of-three. The event is run with open team lists, although players did not learn about this until the start of the tournament.

This event is an official tournamentĀ and is part of theĀ 2023 official circuitĀ in Hong Kong.
The highest-placed players earn invites to the 2023 World Championships.

Overview
The Hong Kong National Championships is the most important VGC competition for players in Hong Kong, where TPC is responsible for the circuit since 2020.
It is the third edition of the Hong Kong National Championships and the secondĀ in the TPC era. See the previous editions:

Previous editions of theĀ Hong Kong National ChampionshipsĀ were open to everyone, and featured Swiss rounds + a single-elimination top cut. This is the first time that a qualifying method has been implemented, and the first time it is played in a pure single-elimination format.

A little bit of history
Hong Kong has been one of the regions on the official TPC circuit since June 2020, and it was part of the Oceania region of the official TPCI circuit before that. It has hosted multiple major events, including Regional Championships, Special Events, and both TPCI-era and current TPC-era National Championships. Hong Kongās greatest VGC success was the top 16 achieved by Edward Cheung Ka Hin at the 2016 World Championships.
The most recent tournament held in Hong Kong was the 2022 Hong Kong National Championships, played in Kowloon Bay with the PokƩmon Sword & PokƩmon Shield VGC Series 12 ruleset in June 2022. The finals saw Hongkonger Pan Si Ming defeat fellow compatriot Ma Chun Yeung to achieve his first major title.
AmericanĀ James Evans, theĀ 2018 Senior Division World Champion, defeated BrazilianĀ Gabriel AgatiĀ in the NAIC finals.
