Overview
The Malaysia National Championships is the most important VGC competition for players in Malaysia, where TPC is responsible for the circuit since 2020.
The tournament was originally announced to take place on 23 June 2024, but was later moved back a week to its final date.
It is the third edition of the Malaysia National Championships, always under TPC. See the previous editions:
Pending confirmation of the format, previous editions of the tournament have been played as Swiss + single-elimination top 8 bracket (2022) and as a pure single-elimination bracket (2023), with most matches played as best-of-1 and only the top cut (2022) or the finals (2023) as best-of-3. After being held fully online in 2023, the tournament is again played as a live event this year.
The ruleset is VGC Regulation Set G, and it is played using open team lists including Natures. It was initially announced to be using VGC Regulation Set F (the official ruleset from January to April 2024), but the decision was later reverted.
A little bit of history
Malaysia has been one of the regions hosting an the official TPC circuit since June 2020, and it was part of the Oceania region of the official TPCi circuit before that. It has hosted multiple major events, including TPCi-era Regional Championships and Special Events, and TPC-era National Championships. Malaysia’s greatest VGC success were the National Championships won by Zarif Ayman in Singapore in 2015 and by Kevin Ngim and Wan Aqil in Malaysia in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
The most recent tournament held in Malaysia was the 2022 Malaysia National Championships, where its top cut was played in Kuala Lumpur with the Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield VGC Series 12 ruleset in June 2022. The finals saw 3-time Special Event finalist Kevin Ngim defeat 2018 Kuala Lumpur Special Event Champion Gary Ng Yeong Jiang to be crowned as first-ever Malaysia National Champion!
The last time the Malaysia National Championships were held was the 2023 edition, played fully online with the VGC Regulation Set C in June 2023. The finals saw 2-time Regional & Special Event finalist Wan Aqil defeat 2022 Malaysia National semifinalist Yong Wai Hou to win his first major title!
