Overview
The Hong Kong National Championships is the most important VGC competition for players in Hong Kong, where TPC is responsible for the circuit since 2020.
It is the fourth edition of the Hong Kong National Championships and the third in the TPC era. See the previous editions:
- Under TPCi
- 2016, won by Or Kei Yin
- Under TPC
- 2022, won by Pan Si Ming
- 2023, won by Wayne Yu
Pending confirmation of the format, previous editions of the tournament have been played as Swiss + single-elimination top 8 bracket (2022) and as a pure single-elimination bracket (2023), with all matches played as best-of-3 (2022) or as best-of-1 with best-of-3 finals (2023).
The ruleset is VGC Regulation Set G, and it is played using open team lists including Natures. It was initially announced to be using VGC Regulation Set F (the official ruleset from January to April 2024), but the decision was later reverted.
A little bit of history
Hong Kong has been one of the regions on the official TPC circuit since June 2020, and it was part of the Oceania region of the official TPCi circuit before that. It has hosted multiple major events, including Regional Championships, Special Events, and both TPCi-era and current TPC-era National Championships. Hong Kong’s greatest VGC success was the top 16 achieved by Edward Cheung Ka Hin at the 2016 World Championships.
The most recent tournament held in Hong Kong was the 2023 Hong Kong National Championships, played in Kowloon with the VGC Regulation Set C in June 2023. The finals saw Hongkonger Wayne Yu defeat 2-time Regional & Special Event Champion Yuen Nga Hin to win his first major title!
American James Evans, the 2018 Senior Division World Champion, defeated Brazilian Gabriel Agati in the NAIC finals.
