Overview

The Sydney Regionals is an official TPCI Regional-level event for Pokémon VGC, TCG and Pokémon GO. It is the second and last Regionals of the 2023 season in the Oceanian circuit, and also the second and last in the NAIC travel award race. This event was originally going to take place on 27-28 May, but was rescheduled on 21 February to its final date in April.

The ruleset is VGC Regulation Set C and it will be played using open team lists. It is the first event in the world to be played with Regulation Set C and, due to Ranked Battles ladder starting on 1 April at 04:00 UTC, it will be played even before the in-game ladder season goes live!

A little bit of history

Australia has been part of the Oceania region of the official TPCI circuit since they were established. It has hosted multiple major events, including Regional Championships, old-era National Championships and all editions of OCIC since its inception in 2017. Australia’s greatest VGC success is Nicholas Kan‘s 2017 Junior Division World Championship win, while in the Masters Division his brother Christopher Kan won the 2017 North America International Championships and Sam Pandelis reached that same year the finals at the 2017 World Championships.

The most recent tournament held in Australia was the 2023 Perth Regionals, played with the VGC Regulation Set B in March 2023. The finals saw Briton Taran Birdee defeat Australian Alister Sandover to win his first major title.

The last time there was an event in Sydney was the 2019 Sydney Regionals, played in Pokémon Ultra Sun & Pokémon Ultra Moon with the VGC19 Ultra Series ruleset in May 2022. The finals saw 2017 North America International Champion Christopher Kan defeat fellow Australian Henry Rich.

Sign-up instructions

Sign-ups for the event are done through RK9 Labs platform, and you will first need to set up your RK9 profile and have a Play! Pokémon Player ID. All players must comply with the Play! Pokémon COVID-19 Protocols.

Sign-ups are A$35 for Masters players and A$25 for Seniors and Juniors players, and they open on 15 March 2023 at 7 pm local time (08:00 UTC).

If the player cap is not reached, sign-ups close 2 hours and 30 minutes before the event starts.

For registered players, team lists must be submitted 2 hours before the event starts, by 1 April 2023 at 7 am local time (31 March at 20:00 UTC). Paper team lists can also be found here.

Spectator passes are A$10 and can be purchased through RK9 Labs.
