Overview
The Liverpool Regionals is an official TPCI Regional-level event for Pokémon VGC, TCG and Pokémon GO. As the first major event of 2023, this is the first Regional in Europe to host an official VGC event in the Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet games.
The ruleset is VGC Series 1 and, for the first time in Regional-level events in Europe, it will be played using open team lists.
A little bit of history
The United Kingdom has been part of the Europe region of the official TPCI circuit for many years. It has hosted multiple major events, including Regional Championships, old-era National Championships, the 2017 and 2018 Europe Internationals and even the 2022 World Championships, the first one to be held in Europe. The United Kingdom’s greatest VGC success was Mark McQuillan‘s 2015 Senior Division World Championship win.
The last time there was an event in Liverpool was the 2022 Liverpool Regionals, played in Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield with the VGC Series 12 ruleset in March 2022. The finals saw Spaniard Eric Rios defeat Frenchman Thomas Gravouille.
The most recent tournaments held in the United Kingdom were the 2022 World Championships and its side event, the 2023 London Open, both played in the VGC Sword & Shield Series 12 ruleset in August 2022. Portuguese Eduardo Cunha defeated Spaniard Guillermo Castilla in the Worlds finals, while Swiss Andrea Olea defeated Spaniard Rafael Busutil in the side event.
