Overview
The Caguas Special Event is an official TPCI Regional-level event for Pokémon VGC and TCG. It is the eleventh and last Regional-level event of the 2023 season in the North American circuit, and, pending an announcement, very likely the fifth in the travel award race for the 2024 season’s first IC. It was announced on 8 June 2023.
It is the fourth of four TPCI Regional-level events of the 2023 season to be played in a single day, and the only one outside the Latin America TPCI region.
The ruleset is VGC Regulation Set C and it is played using open team lists.
A little bit of history
Puerto Rico has been part of the North America region of the official TPCI circuit for many years, as per its status as a territory of the United States. It has hosted multiple Special Events. Puerto Rico’s greatest VGC success is the second place achieved by Quentin Colón at the 2019 North America International Championships in the Seniors Division.
The most recent tournament held in Puerto Rico was the 2020 San José Special Event, played in Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield with the VGC Series 3 ruleset in March 2020. The finals saw American James Eakes defeat Puerto Rican Jonathan Quiñones.
American James Evans, the 2018 Senior Division World Champion, defeated Brazilian Gabriel Agati in the NAIC finals.
Sign-up instructions
Sign-ups for the event are done through the Play LATAM platform, and you will first need to set up your Play LATAM profile and have a Play! Pokémon Player ID. All players must comply with the Play! Pokémon COVID-19 Protocols.
Sign-ups are $25 and they opened upon the announcement of the event.
If the player cap is not reached, sign-ups close 2 hours before the event starts.
For registered players, team lists must be submitted 1 hour before the event starts, by 11 March 2023 at 9:00 local time (12:00 UTC). Paper team lists can also be found here.
Spectator passes are free and can be purchased through RK9 Labs.
